The goal is to propose an e-learning system to help the autonomy of the child with a personalized course. We have designed IntuiGeo , an Intelligent Tutoring System which allows the child to draw freely geometric figures by simulating the traditional pen and paper approach.\u00a0 IntuiGeo interprets, on the fly, the child\u2019s sketches, allowing for a real-time user interaction, and visual, corrective or guidance feedback interventions, in order to enhance the child\u2019s learning performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www-intuidoc.irisa.fr\/files\/2018\/05\/IntuiGeoErgo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1595\" src=\"https:\/\/www-intuidoc.irisa.fr\/files\/2018\/05\/IntuiGeoErgo-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"713\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www-intuidoc.irisa.fr\/files\/2018\/05\/IntuiGeoErgo-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www-intuidoc.irisa.fr\/files\/2018\/05\/IntuiGeoErgo-768x515.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www-intuidoc.irisa.fr\/files\/2018\/05\/IntuiGeoErgo-1024x686.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 713px) 100vw, 713px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The interaction mode is stylus-fingers. The child draws therefore with the pen and is able to manipulate with his\/her hands virtual tools, that simulate the traditional tools used on\u00a0 the paper support such as the ruler, the compass, the protractor, or the set square.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www-intuidoc.irisa.fr\/files\/2018\/05\/IntuiGeoTools.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1597\" src=\"https:\/\/www-intuidoc.irisa.fr\/files\/2018\/05\/IntuiGeoTools-300x156.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www-intuidoc.irisa.fr\/files\/2018\/05\/IntuiGeoTools-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www-intuidoc.irisa.fr\/files\/2018\/05\/IntuiGeoTools-768x398.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www-intuidoc.irisa.fr\/files\/2018\/05\/IntuiGeoTools.jpg 831w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our e-learning system is based on the combination of Pattern Recognition techniques and tutoring expertise. IntuiGeo is therefore composed of two Artificial Intelligence engines:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A 2D recognition engine<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which interprets, on the fly, the pupil drawings and transforms them into geometrical objects, rendering\u00a0 a visual feedback. The real-time interpretation is based on a bi-dimensional grammar called CD-CMG (Context Driven Constraints Multiset Grammar;<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A supervision engine<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, based on three main principles:<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The automatic generation of a construction exercise, based on the teacher solution example;<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Strategy synthesis and planning for exercise resolution: the tutor has to have the necessary knowledge in order to help the pupil;<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Real-time supervision of the pupil resolution strategies: semantic interpretation of the pupil&#8217;s actions in order to provide corrective and guidance feedback.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here is a demonstration video illustrating these concepts in details:<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NXo4uO4a3QY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We followed a user-centred design process, in partnership with our colleagues from LP3C and LOUSTIC. Volunteers professors from middle-schools in the region of Brittany allowed us to carry user experiments with their pupils in their classrooms. The experiments compared the pupils performance when using IntuiGeo with a control group using pen and paper.
